Staff Pick Notes

Giovanni and Massimo Duri, are the 4th and 5th generation winemakers making wine in the village of Prepotto in the Colli Orientali region on easternmost hills of Friuli, a corner of far northeast Italy tucked between the broad plain of Friuli Grave and the rising hills of Slovenia. This is where Refosco's native home lies. It thrives in poor, calcareous-clay soils and on hillside slopes. An inky, ruby hue is opaque in the glass due to long cap management. Aromas of Black fruit, dried cherries, violets, star anise, sawdust and a savory meatiness burst out of the glass. Firm and plump tannins, bright acidity and a pleasant bitterness at the finish make this a perfect food wine. Especially, a lamb ragu with polenta and a generous grating of Montasio cheese.

Refosco

Refosco is actually the name of a group of red grape varieties - but as they produce wines that are nearly indistinguishable, the word "Refosco" is often used as if it were a single grape. Refoscos are medium- to full-bodied wines that are most often fruity, accessible and dry; on rare occasions, however, they can be still, off-dry, non-dessert reds.
