I already know that I Iove the Northern Italian whites, but sometimes I'll try a wine for the first time and get SO excited by it that I immediately see in my head the perfect meal to open the bottle with. This Friulano is incredibly fresh and vibrant, showing orchard fruits with a distinctive edge of saline, herbal aromas, and surprising heft and texture from some aging on the lees. The flavor combo that came into my head was actually from the other end of Italy: a classically Sicilian pasta con le sarde of bucatini with pine nuts, fennel, and fresh sardines. And while it feels like this wine was built for that pairing, the Friulano is surprisingly versatile. It will stand up to difficult pairings like artichokes, asparagus, fatty salumi, or garlic-heavy dishes as well.
