Staff Pick Notes

Borgo del Tiglio’s Collio Bianco is an entry-level wine from the innovative Friulano winegrower Nicola Manferrari, a former pharmacist who inherited his father’s small Collio vineyard in the early 80s. Known best for his whites, especially the symphonic ‘Studio di Bianco’—a blend of Friulano, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, aged in a careful composition of new and old oak—this wine utilizes grapes from the same vineyard, similarly vinified, at a fraction of the cost. For lovers of broad and bold white Burgundies: this is unctuous, creamy and delicately perfumed by new barrels, but with an Alpine freshness evocative of the bright, wildflower-blanketed foothills terroir of the Collio. Would be magic with an old-school French baked fish with cream sauce, or alongside Tomme-style cheeses.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Famous for its fascinating and unusual white wines, this region is home to many avant-garde winemakers (such as Gravner and Vie di Romans) who have expanded their repertoire of winemaking styles to include both the most modern, stainless-steel and barrique-influenced wines, to über-traditional wines with long maceration periods, fermented in clay amphorae. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
