Staff Pick Notes

In the past, Vouvray had a reputation for making wines that, while delicious, lacked the complexity of those of its more famous neighbor to the west, Savanierres. Thanks to the work of a handful of standout winemakers, including Huet, the general public is finally ditching the old stereotype. Domaine Huet, which was founded in 1928 in an area where winemaking dates to the 9th century, has been quietly making age-worthy Chenins on a handful of plots spread across 35 hectares. Their newest grand cru vinyard, Le Mont, was added to the estate in 1957 and has gained a reputation for producing wines that are intense and mineral-driven. These notes are on full display here, where aromas of pear, peach blossom, and green apple give way to a palate that’s intense and fresh. Drink now with a range of food or cellar it and wait for its brilliance.

These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
