Finca las Conejeras Blanco, Lambuena - 2021

750 mL
Item # 54540

An extraordinary bottle of white wine from Burgos, an area typically known for red wines. This is a confounding bottle, one to blind-taste, that was fermented in 100 year old Jerez casks. Aged under flor. Golden in color, dry on the palate, yes, Sherry-esque but never fortified. No sulphur was added to this wine. Pair with clams in a saffron broth.

Staff Pick Notes

Lambuena has come a long way since 1989, when they produced just 3500 bottles using equipment from the local cooperative. Today they are still a family operation, run by siblings Pedro, Ana, and Andrés, and they produce close to a half million bottles at their own winery. The Ribera del Duero DO only recognized a white wine designation in 2019, which confirms what we already knew: white wines have traditionally been overlooked here. But Lambuena’s Finca las Conejeras Blanco will not be overlooked! Despite being composed mostly of Albillo Mayor, the typical regional variety, the wine is anything but typical. Its time in old Jerez casks and under flor have given it a singular character that is evident in the striking amber color and layered aromas of nuts and dried fruits. Rich yet lifted with bright acidity, try it with a spicy Thai curry.

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Ribera del Duero

This region is home to perhaps the most famed and acclaimed Spanish wine in history, the incomparable Vega Sicilia. Indeed for the better part of the twentieth century, Vega Sicilia was the single most expensive wine in Spain and, largely, the country’s major claim to fame on the international market. It wasn’t until 1972 that other winemakers began to creep into the region, but now the Ribera del Duero is home to a wealth of fabulous Tempranillo based wines that consistently garner critical...
