Staff Pick Notes

It's crazy to think the Arneis variety almost went extinct, and that there were less than 120 acres on the ground in the 1990's. Roberto and Massimo Damonte are deeply committed to Arneis and have some of the oldest vines on the ground, averaging around 50 years old. Much like Chardonnay and Riesling, Arneis is a variety that shows terroir with clarity, and when planted in stony calcareous soils, the wines are focused and mineral – think Chablis. This wine comes from a variety of sites, most notably the Renesio and the Trinità crus. Like all of the Roero, Trinità was once an ocean floor. Its soils contain high proportions of sand and clay, along with many fossilized shells. This lends verve and a distinctive salinity to this clean and medium bodied white wine. Firm-fleshed fish and briny clams are a win.

The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Arneis

A white grape variety cultivated almost exclusively in Piedmont. Compared to most wine grapes it has a low acid content, and it was once used to soften the mightily tannic red Nebbiolo. It is occasionally called "Barolo Bianco" by acolytes. Unlike red Barolos, however, wines made from the Arneis grape nowadays are usually meant to be consumed while quite young. They are typically dry and exquisitely perfumed.
