Staff Pick Notes

Today, Roero Arneis is one of Italy’s greatest success stories among the country’s white wines. But no one could have predicted this situation back in the early 1960s, when the Arneis grape was literally a throw away variety, one that had more value as food for birds than as a source of a wonderfully distinct Piemontese white wine. It was often planted between rows of Nebbiolo grapes to attract birds away from the more valuable Nebbiolo berries. Moreover, it translates from local dialect as "Little Rascal", so, nobody wanted to work with it. But in 1967 Currado family started the experiment of vinification of that grape that became the huge success. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Arneis

A white grape variety cultivated almost exclusively in Piedmont. Compared to most wine grapes it has a low acid content, and it was once used to soften the mightily tannic red Nebbiolo. It is occasionally called "Barolo Bianco" by acolytes. Unlike red Barolos, however, wines made from the Arneis grape nowadays are usually meant to be consumed while quite young. They are typically dry and exquisitely perfumed.
