Amarone della Valpolicella, Clementi - 2013

Item # 49640 750 mL

A powerful wine without being hefty. Clementi’s remarkably vibrant, layered Amarone comes from bunches picked in mid-September and dried in shallow wooden crates in a naturally ventilated room of the winery until they lose 40 to 50% of their original water weight.

Staff Pick Notes

When artichoke ravioli with a creamy roasted artichoke mushroom sauce started putting itself together, I knew the time was right to open this wine. This Valpolicellain heavy-weight that’s remarkably light on its feet has had the benefit of thirteen years in the bottle and is showing wonderfully now. The craftsmanship and patience put into this wine is now yours for an absolute steal and certainly warrants picking up a few extra bottles for the cellar. Vibrant and marvelously layered after five years in 30 hecoliter casks followed by three in the bottle, Clementi’s is an Amarone of tension and freshness, tasting not only of dried red fruits and chocolate, but of salt and spice. Powerful without being hefty, and mouthwateringly dry, it’s built for the long haul, and will continue to develop complexity and depth over three decades or more.

Glossary

Corvina

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

Veneto

Valpolicella

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
