Amarone Casa dei Bepi, Viviani - 2016

This is the top cuvée at the Viviani winery and it's made from vines that are up to 80 years old that are planted on limestone and fossilized, pink coral soils. The natural drying process to make Amarone - appassimento - is key in making this unique style of red wine that is bold and full-bodied. The wine was racked into new French barrique and aged for 3 years before bottling.

Viviani = lively. Especially with their Amarone. I’ve been perturbed by a proliferation of a downright sweet style of Amarone. Sticky, unappealing and un-special. All of the Viviani range is indeed special, but I decided to shoot for the stars and sing loud praises for the family’s most special of special - the Casa dei Bepi. All you Big Wine lovers (you know who are) should be grabbing this wine by the case. Hand-picked old-vine Corvina and Rondinella growing happily in nose-bleed-inducing high altitude vineyards create a superlative wine. Extra-traditional care is taken as the grapes are dried then pressed on rubber rollers. The wine matures 36 months in new French barrique. Don't poo-poo the barrique! Remember dizzying heights = acidity. Herbal notes compound the fruit and there is no awkward heat. A wine to fall in love with.
