Staff Pick Notes

Noëlla Morantin makes beautiful wines in Touraine, an appellation in the Loire Valley, but rather than submit her bottles for the AOC to grant appellation status, she bottles her wines as Vin de France. In doing so, she loses the regional recognition that many consumers rely on. The purpose of the AOC is to provide a "sense of place" and to protect the specific profiles wine drinkers have come to expect when hearing names like Sancerre or Chablis. I would argue that Noëlla's wines offer more sense of place than any chemically farmed neighbors. She works organically and has no chemical intervention whatsoever, save for a tiny bit of sulfur added at bottling to help preserve the wine. What you taste is the pure expression of the fruit. Grapefruit, meyer lemon, a seashell minerality, just a hint of green. Wonderfully textured, luscious.

Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
