Staff Pick Notes

The word Rabel signifies enthusiastic and exuberant merry- making - a joyful celebration - and appropriately captures the spirit and energy in this un-oaked white blend from the Cagliero family, in Langhe, Piedmont. The 6 hectare estate is organically farmed and work in the cellar combines traditional techniques with the latest in equipment to make wines that reflect tradition while showing as modern and refined. Rabel Bianco is a blend of Arneis, Sauvignon Blanc, and a lesser known Piedmontese grape, Favorita, which has been found to be genetically identical to Vermentino. Cagliero Rabel Bianco is a lively, medium bodied white with notes of apple, pear, citrus and delicate wild flowers, with bright acidity and textured minerality - a delicious white for any occasion.

Glossary

Piedmont

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara. Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...

Favorita

A lesser-known Piedmontese white grape, recently found to be genetically identical to Liguria's Vermentino variety. It produces fine white wines with a firm grounding of minerals.

Arneis

A white grape variety cultivated almost exclusively in Piedmont. Compared to most wine grapes it has a low acid content, and it was once used to soften the mightily tannic red Nebbiolo. It is occasionally called "Barolo Bianco" by acolytes. Unlike red Barolos, however, wines made from the Arneis grape nowadays are usually meant to be consumed while quite young. They are typically dry and exquisitely perfumed.
