Staff Pick Notes

What a joy it was to meet with Lance Winters, the Owner and Master Distiller at St. George Spirits since its inception circa 1996. As a James Beard Awarded distiller, I have long observed and appreciated his delicious creations in the worlds of Brandy, Absynth and Liqueur. When discussing Bruto Americano, Lance conveyed his dedication to foraging and honoring the rich natural beauty of California. A blend of herbs, roots, and botanicals give Bruto its distinctive signature. Some ingredients are hot-steeped, others are cold-infused. The bitterness comes primarily from gentian root; the citrus notes mostly from California-grown Seville orange; balsam fir and Cascara sagrada (bark of the California buckthorn) contribute woodsy notes. But my favorite note was the subtle Rosemary lingering on the finish.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
