Ribolla Gialla, Ronchi di Cialla - 2023

Item # 27163 750 mL

A very classic Ribolla Gialla. Plush with yellow plum skins and textured minerals on the palate, one is initially taken in by effusive aromas of pear and acacia on the nose. Fuller in texture with orchard fruit acidity, this wine marries well with an array of dishes. Try with white fish appetizers, cod fish croquettes, and Parma ham. This tasty wine is also fine on its own as an apéritif.

Staff Pick Notes

Ribolla Gialla is a signature white variety of Friuli Colli Orientali. An enclave in the Northeast corner of Italy, where warm air off the Adriatic Sea and cool breezes from the Alps converge. The true history of Ribolla Gialla is a question to this day, but the first writings can be traced back to 1300 AD Greece. Ribolla Gialla is a grape variety that is subtle and floral, mild in acid and never abrasive. A cool fermentation with native yeast & extended lees aging creates a medium bodied white wine that will develop beautifully in the bottle over time. This bottling from Ronchi di Cialla is a pure expression of the variety. Grapes are sourced only from family-owned, terraced hill vineyards (25-50 years old) at less than 1000 feet above the nearby coast. A bright nose of yellow apple & white flowers combine with a stony, crisp minerality.

About the Producer

Undine, Friuli, Italy This historical Friulian Estate is strictly a family business. While Dina and Paolo Rapuzzi, who founded it in 1970, were attached by wine growing, their children Pierpaolo and Ivan belong to a generation that "grew up with vines". The policy of the estate was from the beginning to work only with indigenous varieties, such as Ribolla, Refosco, Schioppettino, Verduzzo and...

Glossary

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Famous for its fascinating and unusual white wines, this region is home to many avant-garde winemakers (such as Gravner and Vie di Romans) who have expanded their repertoire of winemaking styles to include both the most modern, stainless-steel and barrique-influenced wines, to über-traditional wines with long maceration periods, fermented in clay amphorae. The grape that benefits most from the latter of these unusual and ancient techniques is the white varietal, Ribola Gialla, which yields...
