Production Methods

Natural

Wine made from organically or biodynamically grown grapes with minimal intervention avoiding the use of chemicals, additives and technology.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

It is my strong conviction that the hills of Gorizia in Friuli offer some of the most interesting and delicious wines in the world. After all, it is here that the western world was (re)introduced to skin-contact white (otherwise known as orange) wines. Many of the region's indigenous varietals take particularly well to this style of wine, including the noble grape Friulano. Kai possesses a delicately light amber hue. Gentle notes of wildflower honey, fleshy nectarines, and oceanic saltiness clash with a driving acidic structure and pointed minerality. It's an elegant, graceful wine packed with flavors that oscillate long after sipping. Drinking alongside a charcuterie board would be the most ideal way to spend an afternoon, though you might regret having only one bottle. Fans of Radikon and Gravner should become acquainted with this one!

The grape that benefits most from the latter of these unusual and ancient techniques is the white varietal, Ribola Gialla, which yields...
