If we could measure pleasure per drop, hands down, Riesling would be at the top of the rankings (Champagne a close second, of course), and this bottle from Monchof shows why. Forget talk of sweetness, Riesling is about balance, harmony, concentration, complexity, and, as I've already mentioned, sheer pleasure. When you take a sip, you want another, and another. Monchof is one of the Mosel's oldest estates, with winemaking here dating back to 1177, and Erden Prälat is one of its most prized vineyards. It's a 1.5 ha grand cru site of 60-100-year-old ungrafted vines on blue-gray slate and red iron oxide producing a wine of purity and elegance. Full of juicy, ripe apple, pear, white peach, marmalade, and the tiniest hint of petrol. This is off dry but so well balanced. It's an absolute stunner; a reason we should all be drinking Riesling.
