Staff Pick Notes

A can of fun, fizzy & fuzzy Rosé from Austria, this a dry (so not sweet) can of wine. Unlike Meinklang Prosa which is made with Pinot Noir, this is made with the holy trio of Austrian red grapes Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St. Laurent. Not overly funky but it does have a bit of natural spirit that I enjoyed and the low ABV is always welcome and its rare to find low alcohol 11% and in canned wine that is this dry and crisp. Good times ahead!

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. Zweigelt, modestly named by Fritz Zweigelt of the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria in 1922, is a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St.-Laurent. It has risen to fame in its homeland and beyond, and now is the single most widely grown red grape variety in Austria. Offering some of the best attributes of both its parents, Zweigelt is very resistant to frost (an important trait to have when growing in chilly Austria) and ripens relatively early. It combines the...

Austria

Austrian wine is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ever since the late 1980s, Austrian winemaking has taken a much more rigorous approach to quality control, and returned to its roots in organic viticulture.Deservedly famous for its white wines (Grüner Veltliners especially), Austria makes a number of delicious red wines as well. The most widely grown red grape in Austria is Zweigelt (a.k.a. Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
