Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum

Life in the navy can be a drag, but the one saving grace, at least for 19th century sailors in the Royal Navy, was overproof rum. At the time, the standard issue ‘tot’ was a blend of rums from across the Caribbean that was proved to ~55% before aging in casks. In a nod to history, the team at Planterray has recreated this historic recipe in honor of Navy veteran and rum impresario Michael Fogg. Today, the rum in question is a blend of 43% Barbados, 36% Trinidad, 17% Guyana, and 4% Jamaica rum, all aged in their home countries before spending almost three years in a combination of ex-Bourbon casks and open wooden vats in France. The result is bold, but accessible: aromas of dried fruit, orange peel, chocolate, and burnt caramel give way to a palate that’s equally dense and sweet, with notes of smoke and esther-driven funk.
