A nearly forgotten about category of bitter liqueurs that is due for a renaissance. Alchermes have their roots in 9th century Persia intially made as a medicinal elixir much like amari. Through the centuries other cultures adapted it and the old styles can vary dramatically, including the colors ranging from scarlet, bronze and in this case, violet. Typical ingrendients for an alchermes can include cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, mace, vanilla, orange peel, anise and coriander. In Italy this liqueur was especially popular in Tuscany, some part of Emilia and Sicily as well. This circa 1950s! bottle comes from the now lost Magnoberta Distillery. Only 1 bottle available.
