A dry sparkling rosé from the estate's Midianytsia vineyard in Transcarpathia. Not too far from Tokaj, Hungary, this region boasts similar volcanic soils. Blaufränkisch is fermented and aged in stainless steel, this boasts bright red fruit aromas. Pair with Deruny pancakes and sour cream.

Staff Pick Notes

Chateau Chizay was founded only in 1995, just after Ukraine's independence. But long before there was a Ukraine, before there were slavs, even before the Huns invaded, in this part of the world there was wine. Likely brought by Roman armies (they were good like that), vines were first planted along the volcanic slopes of the Carpathian mountains nearly 2000 years ago. It's a tradition with a long history, one which winemakers are currently trying to keep alive, Russian invasion be damned. Ch. Chizay's sparkling rose belies the difficulties behind its making. It's delightfully fresh and crisp with juicy red berries, subtle floral notes and a minerally finish. It's no small feat that this has made its way to our shelves. so pop a bottle and raise a glass to these heroic winemakers.

Glossary

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.
