Hausmarke Rot, Moric - 2021

Item # 37347 750 mL

Zweigelt provides the largest share of this red, but the wine's character is dominated by Blaufrankisch. Maybe that's easier to understand when you consider that Zweigelt is a crossing of Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent. So with this much Blaufrankisch in its blood, it can't surprise that the Hausmarke Rot comes across as a Blaufrankisch with a more playful side.

Staff Pick Notes

With 50% Zweigelt, 30% Blaufrankisch, and 20% Blauburgunder, the Hausmarke Rot from Roland Velich (Moric) is an everyday Austrian wine at its best. Roland Velich, the man behind Moric, is a fanatic of the Blaufrankisch grape. Working biodynamically with obsessive sorting, and using old school techniques, like in Burgundy, results in one of the highest rated red wines in Austria. The Hausmarke Rot is aged in used large wooden drums to preserve the fruitiness and freshness. Red berry, cassis, very fruit forward, herbal notes, and a nice depth created by forest floor flavors. Note that Moric wines are organic, but not certified.

Glossary

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.

Zweigelt, modestly named by Fritz Zweigelt of the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria in 1922, is a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St.-Laurent. It has risen to fame in its homeland and beyond, and now is the single most widely grown red grape variety in Austria. Offering some of the best attributes of both its parents, Zweigelt is very resistant to frost (an important trait to have when growing in chilly Austria) and ripens relatively early. It combines the...
