Mars Astor Select Tsunuki Yakushima Aged Single Cask Japanese Whisky - 2017

Item # 50955 700 mL

What more could we possibly ask for from our first single cask bottling from this iconic Japanese distiller. A single vintage distilled and filled in June 2017, made from lightly peated malt at the Mars' family southern Tsunuki distillery in Kagoshima - then transferred to the mythical southern island of Yakushima to age in an ex-bourbon barrel. Aged for over 6yrs, pushing the limit on the older current releases from Mars, and bottled in September 2023 at a natural cask strength of 61% abv. Each sip is like the best of Islay malts a la Lagavulin, with more of a tropical edge, salted butter and deep mouthwatering burst of chocolate and spices on the big lingering finish. In regards to quality, value and distinctiveness this is without a doubt the among the absolute best Japanese Whiskies available.

Staff Pick Notes

The world of whiskey can be very confusing and the Japanese version of it even more so. As for as I can tell, Mars has 2 distilleries and 3 aging site and one of those distilleries changed its name from Shinshu to Komagatake. The Komagatake is the one in central Japan at an elevation of 2,625 ft in the Nagano Alps. This whiskey was distilled at the Tsunuki distilled in the southern Kagoshima area but aged on that special Island of Yakushima which is a UNESCO world heritage site and the inspiration for the Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke. All of that adds some intangible quality that allows that to be much more than the some of its parts. The peat notes are clear & clean much more savory and well integrated than Laphroaig or Lagavulin. This is just a remarkable beautiful whiskey that should be cherished and savored with every sip.
