Staff Pick Notes

I was first pointed towards the Idlewild Winery by a manager of mine here at Astor Wines. I had no knowledge that this winery, producing only Piedmontese varietals, existed. At first I had their "The Bird Flora & Fauna" and I loved it!!! When this Freisa hit the shelves, I couldn't take my eyes off of it until I finally bought a bottle. What a treat! Genetic studies show that Freisa and Nebbiolo share a parent-offspring connection. This would explain their similarities, from the light ruby hue to the lifted freshness paired with firm and textured tannins, however, this wine still has it's California charm. Bright, ripe and fresh fruit notes of strawberry, raspberry and fresh cherry shine. Perfumed with fresh notes of roses, violets and hibiscus countered by spice and a mineral component that is reminiscent of freshly struck iron.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Freisa

The Freisa grape produces delicious red wines in a variety of styles - both still and sparkling, dry and sweet. In each of its many iterations, Freisa remains a very fruit-driven, juicy variety; the wines make excellent matches with light appetizers.
