Casal do Ramilo, Vital Branco - 2019

Item # 46838 750mL

A mineral and saline white from the region to the north of Sintra, this is enitrely Vital. This once-thriving area was decimated by the tumult of mid-20th Century, but this estate has been in the Ramilo family for 4 generations. Pair this medium-bodied dry white with octopus rice.

Staff Pick Notes

The DOC of Colares sits on the coast, northwest of Lisbon, with incredibly old vines planted in sand, a note which is crucial as these vines are completely original and ungrafted vines, unaffected by the plague of phylloxera. The Ramilo family has been producing wines nearby since the 1930s but started the Casal do Ramilo project in 2019 to highlight the capabilities of these wines. This Vital from them truly feels freshness with interwoven saline influence from the Atlantic coastline, white florals (chamomile, daisies), green apple, and an ever present phenolic character that provides lift and spice notes. All the while, this expression retains a supple mouthfeel and rounded texture to it versus the crisp, raciness like a Vinho Verde for example, that truly tugs at my heartstrings and makes me crave Colares wines more so.
