Staff Pick Notes

It’s always on my To Do list to drink more Portuguese wines. The Mater-Dôme Douro Branco from Mateus Nicolau de Almeida and Teresa Ameztoy is a case in point. This husband-and-wife team has made it their mission to showcase specific sub-regions and indigenous varietals of the Douro through their wines. Here, Mateus and Teresa shine the spotlight on Mêda, a subzone within the Douro Superior that is distinctive for its high altitude, wet climate, and soils that transition between schist and granite. Mêda used to enjoy a domestic prestige that faded when many producers reallocated attention and resources to Port wine production for export. The Mater-Dôme sings with notes of wet stone, fleshy white fruits, bright citrus, and a satisfying weight on the palate. Pair with caldeirada de peixe or your favorite local version of fish stew.
