Mataòssu "Vigneto Reiné", Punta Crena - 2023

Italy is the land of a thousand varieties, but the wines of Liguria slip under the radar even among Italian wine aficionados. Luckily for us, the team at Kermit Lynch, long known for championing lesser known appellations and boutique producers, has delivered another gem in the form of the Punta Crena Winery. The winery is located in the coastal village of Varigotti on the Mediterranean and focuses on low-intervention, traditional winemaking. In that spirit, they've made a wine entirely from Mataòssu, a variety that once reigned supreme along the Ligurian coast but was gradually ripped out until the Punta Crema folks came along. Aromas of pine, grapefruit, and fresh herbs give way to a palate that’s bright and balanced, with notes of green apple, fennel, and underripe melon. Perfect with pesto, fish, and a taste of local tradition.
