Haarmeyer Wine Cellars, Riesling "Wirz" Cienega Valley - 2019

Item # 45048 750mL

A dry, more structured Riesling that's golden in color. This comes from the Wirz vineyard was planted in 1963, back when big wineries were still planting vines on their own roots and furrow irrigation. Miraculously, the vineyard remains intact, thanks to the Wirz family. The site is east of the San Andreas Fault line and is limestone and granite-based.

Staff Pick Notes

It’s not everyday you have the privilege to taste a wine grown next to a fault line in the earth’s crust, let alone a Riesling grown next to the San Andreas Fault! These old vines are some of the oldest Riesling vines in California (1963), and when both the vineyard manager and winemaker let nature do the talking, special things can happen. Own-rooted vines without irrigation allow these roots to dig deep into the fissured terroir. A little skin contact lends color, texture, and a savory edge to this wine, where vibrant notes of tea leaves and fresh squeezed lemon juice intertwine with honey and apricot to create a unique Riesling worthy of your attention. Similarities to a classic Arnold Palmer are evident here, with some fault-line pixie dust sprinkled in.
