Grüner Veltliner, Spear Vineyards, Sta. Rita Hills, Camins 2 Dreams - 2022

Item # 44453 750 mL

A richer style of Grüner Veltliner, this wine is lovingly foot-trodden, and the grapes spend a few hours on the skins. Fermentation takes place with natural yeast in both used French Oak, and stainless steel. It is unfined, unfiltered, and has minimal SO2 added at bottling. The wine possesses a beautiful viscous texture, and the Spear Vineyard fruit has a clear personality all its own. Mireia and Tara are partners in the vineyard, and in life, and their wines are clearly a labor of love.

Staff Pick Notes

Camins 2 Dreams, or “path to dreams” in Catalan, is winemakers Tara Gomez (the first recognized Native American winemaker in the US) and Catalunya native Mireia Taribo, who are also wife and wife. This Grüner is a perfect introduction to their terroir-driven, delicious wines. The Pacific breezes that blow through the Sta. Rita Hills, located an hour west of Santa Barbara, help balance the grapes ripening process under the California sun. Using both stainless and neutral oak aging vessels, the winemakers coax out the notes that make this wine so interesting: spicy white pepper, zesty tropical fruit, and a creamy texture. The spontaneous fermentation using wild yeast gives this wine a lively, wild edge to it as well. Share this wine with someone who you share dreams with, and, for maximum creaminess, pair with homemade mac n cheese.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Grüner Veltliner

Referred to by many Americans as "Gru-Ve," this white variety is nearly synonymous with Austrian wine. It's becoming wildly popular at the moment, especially compared to its obscure origins: it's known as the ultimate food wine for its great minerality and appealing freshness. The wines are consistent and eminently drinkable at the low end, and, on the premium side of things, full-bodied, long-lived, world-class whites.
