Staff Pick Notes

Sémillon hasn't had the kind of presence here in the US the way it has in the UK. There, Hunter Valley Sémillon is a thing. We may see a bottle from Bordeaux, but mostly is comes to us as a sweetened, botrytized version from Sauternes (tho no complaints about that). One of its charms, and why it's so great for dessert wines, is its racy acidity. When young, the wines are delightfully fresh and straightforward (not to mention low in alcohol), but as they age, rich toasty notes begin to develop. Charlotte Hardy brings her deft touch to this under-the-radar grape, which she grows in Adelaide Hills. Extensive lees aging gives this a rich, creamy texture, yet it remains crisp and fresh with lovely notes of lemon curd, lemon pith, pear, and sea salt. A great pair with fish or oysters.

Glossary

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....

South Australia

South Australia is home to nearly half the country's wine production as well as the center of premium Shiraz production. It contains the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Coonawarra regions.

Adelaide Hills

One of Australia's premier cool climate wine regions, the Adelaide Hills region is made up of a collection of sub-regions that roughly sit between the Barossa Valley in the north and McLaren Vale in the south. The high altitude and steep topography of the region exert cooling and humidifying effects, which, along with the highest rainfall in South Australia, contribute to a climate very conducive to leaner, more mineral-driven styles of wine.
