Staff Pick Notes

Big, brooding, bold red wines are what most of us think about when Priorat is mentioned. If you do a little searching though, you can find gems from the full spectrum of colors and styles. Established just after the turn of the millennium, Terroir al Limit focuses on enhancing sustainable and traditional grape growing and wine making practices while pushing the boundaries of what one might expect from Priorat. This blend of Grenache Blanc & Macabeo is an authentic expression of the region, despite the fact that it's a white wine. A lo-fi approach is taken, with hand-harvested fruit, native yeast, and whole cluster fermentation. A smidge of skin contact adds texture and savory herbal notes, coupled with bright citrus peel. If unexpected surprises are your thing, don't miss out on this wine!

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Priorato

Priorat is the precocious new kid on the Spanish wine scene. Twenty years ago, this tiny Northwestern winemaking region was all but forgotten. Then, after a handful of winemaking mavericks moved into the area, Priorat began to produce some of the most powerful, complex, and expensive wines on the market. In 2003, Priorat was awarded the prestigious D.O.C. status - a term previously held only by Rioja - and prices and quality levels have continued to soar ever since. Garnacha (called...

Terroir

“Terroir” means earth or soil in French. In the wine world, terroir refers to the physical conditions of a region, a vineyard site, or any parcel of vine-populated land. Terroir is the interplay between soil and climate and the impact of these elements on a wine.

Blanco

White tequila, an official type (tipo) for tequila bottled fresh from the still, or allowed to rest in stainless steel tanks for up to sixty days before bottling. It is never aged in wooden barrels. Also known as plata, plato, and silver tequila. Usually the most robust, strong-flavoured of the tequila types.
