Staff Pick Notes

Maria José Yravedra is an absolute visionary in Ribeira Sacra, producing wines that not only show the local varieties with clarity and balance. She accomplishes this through natural farming and biodynamic principles, and a minimalistic and gentle approach in the winery, with a gravity flow system instead of pumps, old wood casks and concrete use for aging, and very little sulfur additions.  Vela`uveyra,-“to gaze at the vineyards” in the Galego dialect - is predominately Mencia, with small amounts of Garnacha and the local Negreda, all grown on granitic soils. The wine is shows spicy dark fruit on the nose and is medium body and quite “Syrah like”. A hint of white pepper and brambly fruit appear on the palate with with fresh acidty. A chillable and versatile red that will delight with anything from the grill to a "Paella Gallega".

The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Ribeira Sacra

Though this DO was only created in 1996, wine has been produced along the “sacred banks” of the Sil River in Galicia ever since the Romans came to town, bringing with them the knowledge that terraces make the best vineyards. The river exerts its cooling influence on the vines (mostly Mencía), which cling to their spots on terraced vineyards cut steeply up the riverbanks. Vines must struggle for nutrients here, and this gives concentration to the fruit. The red wines of Ribeira Sacra are...
