Staff Pick Notes

The wines of De Fermo, a biodynamically farmed estate in Abruzzo, are some of my very favorites among natural producers of Southern Italy. Their top bottlings are superb stand-ins at a fraction of the price of heavy hitters like Emidio Pepe. Their commitment to biodiversity in the vineyard and minimal intervention during production is largely unheard of in the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo zone. Their Vino Rosso 'Concrete' is, plainly said, a fun, everyday, light-bodied natural red. It's a bottle of Montepulciano that may remind you of those rustic table wines you experienced in taverns across Italy, drunk preferably with a chill, fuzzy, and a touch fizzy in that wild-fermented way, with a zip of acid and supporting tannins. Grab a sausage pizza, a bowl of cacio e pepe, or a spread of cured meats.

Many of the modern incarnations of Abruzzi’s favorite red wine are bigger, more structured,...
