"Substance", Julien Pineau - 2020

Item # 40847 750 mL

Substance is old vines Sauvignon Blanc (the #5!) from the Clos Roche Blanche estate which was taken over by Julien Pineau. To drink this immediately would give pleasure but is more of a shame as this could age for many years to come.

Staff Pick Notes

So I saw this bottle named after and displaying a label that replicates New Order's Substance album cover. Aw, heck, I thought. At least it will bring back memories of swaying and bopping to "Bizarre Love Triangle" at those 1987 college dance parties. Substance, the wine is made with Sauvignon Blanc from 70 year old and organically farmed vines. Julien Pineau's vineyards are the sacred plots previously worked and owned by Clos Roche Blanche. Substance defies any expectation of Sauvignon Blanc. It is textured and juicy with a tingle of residual CO2. Flavors of cidery yeast, melon, citrus, nutmeg, and almonds appear on the nose and palate. A very cool wine indeed. Serve alongside a roast cauliflower salad while blasting tunes like "Perfect Kiss" and "Blue Monday".

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
