Staff Pick Notes

If you’re looking to purchase a more premium style of Chianti at an affordable price point, then I would recommend trying Vallone di Cecione’s Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Established in 2014, the “Gran Selezione” designation requires a minimum of 90% Sangiovese, vinification from estate-owned grapes, and a minimum aging period of 30 months. This expression is made from 100% Sangiovese, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and spends two years aging in oak. This Chianti is red-fruited on the palate, displaying notes of red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, and red currant. A little bit of vanilla is also present, but fruit remains the dominant profile. The next time you’re looking for an alternative to Brunello di Montalcino, give this one a try!

Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the...

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh fruit and herbs, while Chianti Classico Riserva can be dark and brooding. The term “Super Tuscans”...
