Staff Pick Notes

5 Words: Perfumed, Granite, Finesse, Licorice, Raspberry 100% Garnacha Wines from Madrid, you say? Yes. Coming from an elevation of 900 meters in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range. Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia make wine here that drinks like Burgundy and Northern Rhone had a baby. "La Bruja" is their entry level, or "village wine" (another ode to Burgundy). This Garnacha is sourced from multiple sites over granitic sand in Las Rozas de Puerto Real. These wild vines are hand-harvested, the juice sees a long 50-60 day maceration, and the wine ages in big, primarily neutral oak barrels. While there is no shortage of herbal and fruit notes, this wine has a distinct rocklike backbone. Fun Fact: Dani and Fernando gained the trust of older grape growers in the area by throwing back beers with them in the local bars.

The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...
