Glossary

Mavrodaphne

Pronounced "mav ro THAf nee", this grape is used, most famously, to make the sweet, fortified, aged wine that hails from Patras in Peloponnese. Rich in body and long in the finish, these lovely dessert wines often display aromas of dried fruits and cinnamon. Mavrodaphne makes a perfect accompaniment to chocolate desserts, or on any occasion that calls for port.

Xynomavro

Pronounced "ksee NO ma vro", this is one of Greece’s most important red varietals. The primary grape of Naoussa, this grape produces wines of extraordinary depth and complexity. Frequently likened to Nebbiolo, these wines are dark and tannic in their youth, and benefit immensely from ageing. Typical aromas are black olive, cooking spices, earth, and black fruit.
