Pinot Nero "Praesulis", Markus Prackwieser Gump - 2021

Item # 39236 750 mL

With slopes at an incline of 50 to 55% and at an elevation of 500 meters asl, this qualifies as extreme winemaking. Cultivating Pinot Noir makes great sense in the cooler climate of the southern Valle Isarco. The soils are full of chalk, quartz and porphyry. After fermentation, this was aged for a year in barrique. The result is a vibrant red wine of elegance.

Staff Pick Notes

This is a very impressive Pinot Noir from Trentino Adige's Markus Prackwieser Gump. Smooth and velvety with notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, balsamic, and leather, this can most definitely hang tough with the French and American big shots of Pinot. Grown at over 1600 ft elevation in picturesque mountain surroundings, this is the newest creation by the family-run Gump winery. Their wines exhibit all kinds of freshness and cool crispness, and this Pinot Nero is no exception. I'd drink this with some veal scallopini in a second, but it'd also be a great sidekick to some rognon à la moutarde. A standout wine that'll be worth your while.

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Trentino-Alto Adige

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...
