l'Enchanteresse, La Grapperie - 2019

Item # 38815 750mL

Pineau d'Aunis is uniquely from the Loire Valley. This special bottling comes from vines over 100 years in age and planted on clay and silex soils. After desteming the fruit, the wine is fermented and then aged in 228 liter old barrels and aged for 3 years before bottling. Zero sulphur was added to this wine. Winemaker Rénaud Guettier has 4 ha of vines in 15 different plots that sustain a diversity of microclimates along the left bank of the Loire River.

Staff Pick Notes

Pineau d`Aunis is a little known grape in the Loire Valley. A shape-shiftier, taking many forms. But this bottle is hands down my favorite style of Pineau d'Aunis I've ever had. Remember playing Mario Kart on Nintendo 64? Close your eyes and imagine walking on the rainbow road track but instead of all the colors of the rainbow the road is made up of many translucent ruby red hues. Hanging in the sky are mirages of cherries, raspberries and lemon rinds. On those nose you get beautifully vivid cranberry notes, buzzing with electricity. But the most vivid part of this wine is the palate. The mouth feel is the most complex I've encountered to date. Prickly all over, clinging to your tongue. The buzzing energy giving your tongue a hug.

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
