Staff Pick Notes

Domaine Tempier dates back 1936, when Lucie Tempier married Lucien Peyraud. Situated just outside the Mediterranean seaport village of Bandol, the estate was a wedding gift, planted full of the then out-of-trend variety of Mourvèdre. Lucien, celebrated today as the Godfather of Bandol, saw the age worthy potential of Mourvèdre and went all in, re-planting the vineyards at a time when producers were abandoning the variety. This iconic Bandol Rosé is made with 55% Mourvèdre and a combination of Grenache and Cinsault. The tart strawberry character of the fruit is perfectly balanced by earthen minerality. This is due to a combination of the clay, limestone soil throughout the vineyards and the half of the cuvee rested on concrete tank for 7 months. The result its a Rose that can be savored today or mature for decades in your cellar.

Vines in Bandol are grown in very meager soils of gravel, clay, and limestone: this, combined with the hot, dry coastal climate, gives these thick-skinned berries exactly what they need in order to thrive.

Provence

Provence has some of the best vine-growing territory in the world, with a perfect Mediterranean climate tempered by the cooling effects of the sea. The region produces a broad range of wines, the majority of which pair effortlessly with the light, herb-infused cuisine of Provence. Bandol, arguably the most significant appellation in Provence, produces spicy, earthy, rich red wines. These tend to be big and well-structured, relying on the Mourvèdre grape for their power.
