Staff Pick Notes

While love can certainly be in the air, it most certainly also lives in Beaujolais’ northern most Cru. Michel Tete and his son Sylvain have built up Domaine du Clos du Fief since the 1980s and cover 3 of Beaujolais’ crus (Saint-Amour, Julienas, and Chenas) while producing lovely Cremants and Beaujolais-Villages wines as well. This Gamay comes from 35-year-old vines grown in a rare, small parcel known as Les Capitans with granite soils. Semi-carbonic vinification and aged in tank to preserve its elegance, this is a light bodied red that fills the glass with evocative violets, pomegranate and blackberry aromas. Crushed gravel and banana make themselves present on the palate along with vibrant acidity. Most certainly fruit forward and most certainly my love dearest.

Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
