Tschida, Himmel auf Erden, Rosé - 2023

750 mL
Item # 35845

An intentionally cloudy rosé wine that is prickly on the palate and raw in character. You'd never guess by the aromatics that this is entirely Cabernet Franc. Such is the wild character of Christian Tschida who makes his wines in a fashion that exudes this character. These wines are made for the adventurous palate. Christian Tschida has the great fortune to cultivate 10-hectares of old vines that have been with his family for 4 generations. The winery is located in the Neusiedlersee part of Burgenland, the eastern most point of Austria. The vineyards consist of sandy gravel, schist and limestone, which all enjoy a moderating influence from the extremely large and nearby Lake Neusiedler.

Staff Pick Notes

This is Cabernet Franc from Austria, and that's only the beginning of its contradictions. It is, as you might expect, an unfiltered wine with no added sulfur, but it also spends a year ageing in barrel. It's dark and cloudy, but bright with acidity. I'm going to throw out a bunch of words for you all at once, because I think you'll find all of it in the wine: precision, nectarine, watermelon, animal, hops, wet stone, wild strawberry, funk, dried flowers. "Himmel auf Erden" means "Heaven on Earth" and it's not -just- a wine that makes you feel really, really good, it plays with the tension between the two. It stains your hands and lips and appeals to instinct, but also leaves you feeling a bit of awe.

Cabernet Franc

Relegated to moderate obscurity in modern times, Cabernet Franc is in fact the proud parent of the attention-hogging Cabernet Sauvignon (after an illicit affair with Sauvignon Blanc a hundred-odd years ago). Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends. In fact,...

Austria

Austrian wine is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ever since the late 1980s, Austrian winemaking has taken a much more rigorous approach to quality control, and returned to its roots in organic viticulture.Deservedly famous for its white wines (Grüner Veltliners especially), Austria makes a number of delicious red wines as well. The most widely grown red grape in Austria is Zweigelt (a.k.a. Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
