Staff Pick Notes

For a long time, Champagne has been the eponym for all sparkling wine, due to its quality. But it’s wines like this Sekt from Nigl that show that Champagne doesn’t corner the market on fine bubbly. This wine consists of Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner, and is carbonated within the bottle. The first thing you’ll notice is its voluminous mousse. The miniscule bubbles create a creamy-but-light-as-air texture. Dip your nose in for some southern homemade whipped cream, freshly baked biscuits, and crushed vanilla bean. The palate takes you in a new direction with bright kiwis, candied oranges, juicy pears, and mouthwatering texture. I know it is easy to reach for Veuve or Moët, but my belief is that after you’ve tried this you'll be glad you stepped outside of your comfort zone.

About the Producer

Kremstal, Austria Weingut Nigl, located deep in the Krems Valley on the edge of the Senftenberg mountain, often evokes feelings that one has travelled back to medieval times; the wines Martin Nigl creates are as ethereal as the vine lands that they come from. The ruins of the Senftenberg castle, erected in 1197, are perched above the terraced vineyards Höchacker, Pellingen, Piri, and...

Glossary

Grüner Veltliner

Referred to by many Americans as "Gru-Ve," this white variety is nearly synonymous with Austrian wine. It's becoming wildly popular at the moment, especially compared to its obscure origins: it's known as the ultimate food wine for its great minerality and appealing freshness. The wines are consistent and eminently drinkable at the low end, and, on the premium side of things, full-bodied, long-lived, world-class whites.

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...

Austria

Austrian wine is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ever since the late 1980s, Austrian winemaking has taken a much more rigorous approach to quality control, and returned to its roots in organic viticulture.Deservedly famous for its white wines (Grüner Veltliners especially), Austria makes a number of delicious red wines as well. The most widely grown red grape in Austria is Zweigelt (a.k.a. Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
