Pétulant Naturel Malvasia Bianca, Birichino - 2023

750 mL
Item # 32332

Yes, it's supposed to be cloudy. Pétulant naturel is Birichino's California answer as to how to produce delicious, lightly sparkling wine (a Pét-Nat or Pétillant Naturel). Birichino was established by Alex Krause and John Locke, two Bonny Doon veterans, who have ventured on their own and seek out old vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation and beyond.

Staff Pick Notes

Ever wonder what people mean when they say a wine is “energetic”? You need to try this sleepy (kidding) petnat from Birichino. Alex Krause and John Locke source fruit from organic winegrowers in Central California and vinify naturally with minimal intervention. Abundantly aromatic Malvasia is macerated for 33 days on the skin with full malolactic fermentation. The wine is then held in neutral oak for 14 months. A splash of sweet Malvasia juice is added at bottling for the second fermentation. You have here a wine that reeks of flowers, nectarines, lychee, and honeysuckle. There is generous fruit on the palate with salinity and a tinge of honest bitterness. This is as fun as wine gets.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
