Great with veal, lamb or mature hard cheeses, this wine is 100% Nebbiolo from the western Sassella appellation in the Valtellina where Nebbiolo was born. Alfio Mozzi's vineyards are located in the village of Castione Andevenno where he works his 3.5 ha estate high up in the slopes overlooking the Adda River. Nebbiolo from this region is called Chiavannasca.

Did you notice the label? It turns out the slate soil of this appellation acts like a little incubator, both retaining soil heat and reflecting light. This lets prickly pears grow even in the northern most reaches of Italy. More important, it permits the steady ripening of Nebbiolo. While Barolo and Barbaresco are famously brooding in their youth, Nebbiolo of the Valtellina is often much more approachable. Alfio Mozzi meticulously tends his 3.5 hectares of vines along a narrow valley expanse that is steep and formidable. The fruits of his labor produce a wine replete with floral headiness, sweet tannins and tempered acidity. It's a delight.
