Lustau Solera Reserva Brandy

Item # 30247 700 mL

Aged for three years in used Amontillado Sherry casks, this is a classic solera-aged brandy de Jerez. The rich, beautiful notes of vanilla extract, roasted nuts, black strap molasses, grilled apricots, and caramel are solid and sustained on the nose while the palate is dry, oaky, and focused with additional notes of new leather, and crème brúleé, finishing with flavors of fried bananas and nutmeg. This is highly mixable as well, and no doubt one of the best brandy values in the world from a historic producer.

Staff Pick Notes

Spanish brandy is in a class of its own: largely misunderstood and woefully underappreciated outside of its home country or a small community of snooty mixologists. Leave it to famous Andalucian sherry house Lustau to create a lovely brandy at a low price to introduce you to this excellent spirit genre! Aged 3 years in American oak that previously held Amontillado sherry, their Brandy de Jerez is rounder and a tad sweeter than French examples, but with a nuance and composition that is quite rare for brandies at this price point. With a sustained nuttiness, a streak of citrus, and a long, slightly smoky finish, this is a great tipple for the cooler months, perfect in a celebratory French 75, for spiking your holiday eggnog or hot cider, or enjoyed neat in a copita after dinner with chocolate.

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Solera

The real magic in the production of Sherry happens in what's called the solera system - an innovative method of fractional blending in which younger wine is blended with older wine to ensure a consistent product from year to year. The younger wine serves to refresh and awaken the older wine, while the older wine enhances the depth and quality of the younger wine. Thus, with the exception of a handful of single barrels pulled from the solera, there really is no "vintage Sherry": any date...
