Grignolino d' Asti, Crivelli - 2023

750 mL
Item # 26989

A surprisingly dark Grignolino, brimming with black cherry, briary berries laid richly over a rustic texture. This is old vine Grignolino; its earthy weight offers unexpected pleasures for those who love to adventurous pairings. Try with roasted shrimp or crab in hearty tomato broth. Also fine for herbed chicken or pork sausages. Marco Maria Crivelli is one of a small group of farmers who fervently believe in the excellence of Piedmont "other" grape varieties, indigenous to the province of Asti. His ancestors had planted 5 hectares of vineyards in 1919; these vines grow in mineral-rich sand and tufa soils.

Staff Pick Notes

Grignolino is such a pleasant surprise, every time I drink it. It always leaves me feeling a bit remorseful for not having recalled it when I had purchased a Cru Beaujolais instead. Growers in Piedmont are planting more and more Grignolino, believing it to have potential for even more expressive wines. I'm not sure about all of that, but I will say it's pretty darn good, and well-priced as is, and I'd hate for that to change. Much like a classic Gamay it has this bright red plum, peppery quality with perhaps a touch less noticeable acidity, but with equally a bit more tannin. Of note, Crivelli's Grignolino also possesses a hint of menthol on the nose and a bit of sage on the finish. Personally, I think this herbaceous tinge makes it that much more charming and a great natural companion for grilled meats and lighter game.

Glossary

Piedmont

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara. Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Grignolino

The Grignolino grape derives its name from grignole, meaning "pips." This small-berried red variety makes some truly intriguing wines, because the grapes produce very little juice in proportion to the amount of pips and skins. These elements, combined in these proportions, yield deliciously earthy wines that are pale in color (often resembling Beaujolais), and unexpectedly tannic.
