Albariño, Bodegas Zarate - 2023

Item # 26007 750 mL

A finely tuned Albariño. Brilliantly clean, stony tropical pineapple presents clearly on the nose and palate. Yellow citrus flavors are like a simple, well-constructed melody, balanced and constrained. Serve with garlic shrimp, chicken breast sauté or light white fish. This is Zarate's entry level Albariño. There is no oak contact; it is fermented and kept 100% in stainless steel

Staff Pick Notes

Ernesto Zárate started an Albariño Festival in Salnés’, the capital of Cambados, in 1953. Winning first prize three years in a row, he suddenly withdrew his wine from the competition, vowing not to re-enter until another grower matched his accomplishment. To this day, no one has. These days Eulogio Pomares helms this ancient Bodega and believes “the problem with Albariño is that the message has been 'drink young, drink young, drink early, drink young' for the last 20 years. But the best thing with Albariño is to make wines that last." Well, a lasting impression is what I got from this Albariño that is clearly a cut above the rest. Waiting for the first hot and humid day in NYC to enjoy, I was refreshed beyond belief with flavors of grapefruit popsicle, lemon zest, and mouth-watering acidity. Enjoy it now, or hold, be amazed later.

Zarate is a family-owned estate located in the Village of Meano, found in the heart of the Salnez Valley, which is a part of the Spanish Rias-Baixas Denominacion de Origen. The property is centered on a manor (or pazo) originally built in the sixteenth century which was completely restored two hundred years later. The winery was founded in 1707 by Diego Zarate y Murga, the first Marques of...

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Rías Baixas

Located on the Northeast coast of Spain, just north of the Portuguese border, Rías Baixas is home to the famed white grape varietal Albariño. These deliciously refreshing whites typically offer aromas of peach, apricot, and melon, backed by a steely minerality and a lean, crisp finish.

Albariño

The primary grape of the Rías Baixas (Lower Inlets) section of the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, Albariño is considered by many to be Spain's premier white wine. It also plays an important role in northern Portugal (where it is known as Alvarinho) as a component of Vinho Verde. The thick-skinned grapes thrive in the cool, windy climates of Galicia and northern Portgual, yielding intensely aromatic wines with typical aromas of almonds, white flowers, and stone fruits; the best examples...
