This Washington Syrah, grown near the Oregon border, has a clean nose of pulpy black fruit with undercurrents of shady, dark minerals. Candied fruit, violets, and black currants are all present in this full-bodied wine. From sustainably maintained vines planted in 1982 on basaltic soils and loess, the wine was fermented in equal parts neutral French oak, stainless steel, and a concrete "egg," yielding heady aromatics and an undeniably New-World edge.

'Fausse Piste' translates to 'wrong road,' a reference to winemaker Jesse Skiles' change of course from his former vocation as a chef at a winery. Syrah from Washington State is its own beast. While it shares a few traits with its California cousins and Rhône ancestors, it distinguishes itself as an intense, muscular combination of dark fruit and rich earth. This Syrah is a perfect example. Black currant, blackberry, and cassis are balanced by smooth tannins, assertive acidity, and an underlying salinity. While hearty cold weather fare like venison may come first to mind, this heavy-hitter would be equally well-matched with a porterhouse on any old day of the year.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
