Dolcetto d'Alba, G. D. Vajra - 2023

Item # 25628 750 mL

The Vajra Dolcetto d’Alba is everything Dolcetto should be; fresh, varietally correct and clean. Here all of those qualities are given an extra measure of elegance and sheer class. Fresh mint, blueberries and licorice linger on the subtle finish. If serving pork, lamb or hearty braised vegetables, this is the wine.

Staff Pick Notes

Traditionally, Dolcetto is drunk while the vintners wait for their Barolo to age. The grapes are cultivated in prime land, just above Nebbiolo vineyards. This sub-$20 bottle of wine can introduce you to this gem of a grape! Aged entirely in stainless steel, G.D. Vajra, makes classically styled wines using all estate fruit. With dark, purple skins, this wine has a short maceration time to produce an inky dark wine with soft tannins and fresh acidity. This wine shows notes of black fruit, fresh violets, licorice, and a pleasant bitterness. If you feel like tasting a classic producer making a classic example of wine without spending a million bucks, try this G.D. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba with your favorite pizza. I prefer mushrooms and pepperoni!!

Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Dolcetto

A red grape variety grown in Piedmont and nearly nowhere else. Dolcetto-based wines are not sweet, as many people might surmise on hearing the name; the Piedmontese declared it "dolce" only because it is lower in acid than the wines they're used to. Dolcettos are usually meant to be enjoyed young. Some of the best ones come from the area around the town of Alba.
