Aleatico Rosso "Alea Viva," Andrea Occhipinti - 2022

Item # 23608 750 mL

Aleatico is a native grape that's typically vinified into a dessert wine. However, in this case, Andrea Occhipinti offers a compelling, aromatic, dry version. This is a red wine made from vines planted on the volcanic slopes of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The highly aromatic nose offers notes of wild raspberry and lively dark fruits and tannins.

Staff Pick Notes

For those who are very fond of aromatic wines such as myself, I would highly recommend this Aleatico from Andrea Occhipinti. With intense aromas of violets, dried rose petals, licorice, cherries, raspberries, and a touch of black pepper, this wine is a fine perfume in the glass. The intense aromas and flavors are nicely balanced with medium body. From vineyards on volcanic soils on the shore of Lake Bolseno Occhipinti has been experimenting with several stylistic iterations of Aleatico. From a grape traditionally used to make a dessert wine he makes a white, a rosé, and this red wine, all vinified dry. Without much stylistic precedence Occhipinti has free reign to work his magic on his own terms. The wide range of flavors, medium tannins and acidity, make this a versatile pairing for a range of foods. Try it with Persian cuisine!

Soon after graduating, Andrea was able to purchase 4 hectares of vineyards planted in the 1990’s. They are set at 450 meters above sea level (1500 feet) on the volcanic slopes of Lake Bolsena,...

Aleatico

Aleatico is a red-skinned member of the Muscat family of grapes. It is used in the production of sweet dessert-styled wines, both fortified and not. It grows predominantly in Puglia (Apulia), in the heel of the boot of southern Italy, and on the Island of Elba (to which Napoleon was exiled for life; legend has it that drinking Aleatico wine was the only enjoyable part of Napoleon’s lengthy stay). The berries are a bright, almost bluish-red color with assertive aromas of roses, lychee fruit, and...
