Staff Pick Notes

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was drinking, not even my spouse. There were potatoes galore and hot roasted pork, all that was missing was the pop of a cork. The Christmas tree twinkled, the fire glowed red, while visions of Riesling danced in my head. A Kabinett from the Mosel, what could be more divine? Lucky for us, I had just the wine. An all-natural nectar, from the master himself, a wine that would please even a finicky elf. It's racy and bright with sweet apple and pear in an ethereal dance, like Rogers and Astaire. Add a streak of wet stone, and petrol-like scents; a wine for the holidays, ladies and gents.

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
